Our Story: From 1970 to the Next Turn

Skiing at Milton is about the thrill of the winter and the energy of a team that loves to move. The Mustangs train four days a week at Blue Hill, the program's home hill just ten minutes from campus, and race every Wednesday at Nashoba Valley against ISL competition, with the New England Class B Championship serving as the season's proving ground each February.

What sets Milton Skiing apart is the breadth of who it serves. Roughly 75 percent of the team learns to race for the first time through Milton's own program, while returning veterans and experienced weekend or FIS-level racers use the team's mid-week training to stay sharp for outside competition. That mix produces a roster that is as much about development as it is about depth — a team capable of placing skiers in the top fifteen at any event while still welcoming athletes who are clipping into a race course for the very first time.

The program's mindset reflects that same balance: confidence built through technical precision, and joy built through genuine team connection. Whether an athlete's goal is a spot on the podium or simply the rush of their first run through the gates, the culture at Milton is built on the belief that everyone's progress matters to the team's success — and that the real legacy of this program isn't found in any single banner, but in the momentum the Mustangs build together, season after season.

Program Philosophy:
Finding Your Edge

We believe the best racing comes from a place of confidence and joy. Our philosophy is simple: technical drills sharpen your skills, and a supportive environment sharpens your spirit. Whether training under the lights at Blue Hill or racing at Nashoba Valley on a Wednesday afternoon, the focus is always on individual progress and team connection.

We balance accountability with personal advocacy. While we expect mental toughness on the hill, our coaches are the first to celebrate every breakthrough, ensuring each athlete feels seen and valued. There's a specific kind of magic in a winter afternoon on the hill — the crisp air, the sound of a clean edge on the snow, and the peer-to-peer mentorship that happens between runs. We teach our skiers that being true to the process is what leads to success, building a lifelong passion for the mountains and the belief that they can tackle any challenge, on or off the slopes.

A Place for Everyone

Opportunities: 1st Team, 2nd Team

Milton Academy offers a comprehensive program with four teams — Boys' and Girls' Varsity and Junior Varsity — and we take pride in being a program where there is truly a space for everyone. You don't need a decorated racing résumé to join us; you just need the desire to learn.

A portion of our team members learn to race for the first time right here with us, while experienced weekend and FIS racers get high-level mid-week training that keeps them sharp without pulling them away from life at Milton Academy. Whether you're looking to shave seconds off your slalom time or experience the rush of your first giant slalom course, the Mustang ski family is ready to welcome you.

Coaching Staff

Patrick Broome

Head Coach

Coach Broome serves as Head Coach of the Milton Academy ski program, bringing extensive experience in competitive alpine racing and multi-sport coaching. He also leads the Milton sailing program and serves as an administrator in the Lower School.

Under his leadership, the program has maintained its standing as a top contender in the ISL and the New England Class B circuit. Coach Broome specializes in bridging the gap between developmental skiing and elite race performance, having coached everyone from first-time racers to FIS-level athletes. His training regimens at Blue Hill emphasize the technical precision of slalom and giant slalom, preparing Milton athletes for the rigors of the postseason.

Known for balancing firm accountability with personal advocacy, Coach Broome prioritizes the mental toughness required for alpine competition — focusing on fundamental mechanics and tactical discipline to help the Mustangs achieve consistent top-tier finishes while fostering a culture of resilience and growth.

Mark Goodrich

Assistant Coach

Coach Goodrich brings a wealth of technical expertise and a lifelong passion for alpine racing to the Milton Academy ski program. As an assistant coach, he plays a vital role in the mid-week development of both the varsity and junior varsity teams at Blue Hill, focusing on the fundamental mechanics that translate to speed on race day.

Coach Goodrich specializes in the tactical nuances of slalom and giant slalom, working closely with athletes to refine their edge control and gate approach. His coaching style emphasizes personal advocacy, helping students of all experience levels build the confidence necessary to attack challenging courses — whether working with a seasoned weekend racer to shave seconds off their time or guiding a newcomer through their first set of gates.

Olivia Bell '15

Assistant Coach

Coach Bell-Alpine serves as an assistant coach for the Milton Academy ski program, focusing on the technical progression and on-snow confidence of both varsity and junior varsity racers. A Milton Academy alumna, Class of 2015, and former competitive racer herself, she brings an authentic understanding of the mental and physical demands of the starting gate to the slopes of Blue Hill.

On the hill, Coach Bell-Alpine is a primary advocate for student growth, specializing in breaking down complex slalom and giant slalom mechanics into actionable drills. She is particularly skilled at mentoring the program's developmental skiers, helping the majority of the team who are new to the sport transition into confident, tactical racers. Her approach balances the high standards of the ISL with a genuine joy for the sport, ensuring that every athlete — regardless of experience level — feels supported as they find their edge and push their personal limits.

Honors & Awards

Skiing became a varsity sport at Milton Academy in 1970, and the program has fielded both boys' and girls' teams at the varsity and JV level since 1980. The Girls' team has won the New England Class B Championship and the ISL title, including an undefeated regular season, and the Boys' team has captured three ISL Championships and two New England Class B titles — a record of sustained success across more than five decades of program history.

That tradition reached a defining moment when the Mustangs swept both the boys' and girls' team titles at the Class B NEPSAC Alpine Skiing Championship at Okemo Mountain — the program's first NEPSAC sweep since 2002. The girls' team won by a commanding margin, while the boys' team posted a historic turnaround, cutting their score from 189 points the previous year to a championship-winning 58. As one team captain put it afterward, "a change in mindset" was as responsible for the result as any single performance on the hill.
