Forty Decades of
Girls’ Hockey Tradition

Milton Hockey is defined by its consistency at the highest level of NEPSAC Division I competition. Following a legendary 20-year era of growth, the program is now led by Head Coach Liz Keady Norton, who brings a renewed focus on elite performance for the modern era. The Mustangs’ schedule is one of the most rigorous in New England, featuring the prestigious Flood Marr Holiday Tournament, a cornerstone of the prep calendar that draws NHL and collegiate scouts from across the country. This tradition of excellence is reflected in our alumni ranks, with former Mustangs currently skating for top-tier programs in Hockey East, the ECAC, AHA and NESCAC. Whether competing for an ISL title or showcasing talent in front of recruiters, the varsity team remains committed to a future of championship-caliber play and individual player advancement.

Program Philosophy: Character & Competition

The girls’ hockey program is committed to achievement on the ice, in the classroom, and as contributing citizens in the world. We believe the lessons learned through high-level athletics—including teamwork, commitment, winning with grace, and losing with honor—are essential life skills that remain with our student-athletes long after they leave the rink.

Our goal is to develop the total person. By fostering growth in our athletes as complete players, teammates, and students, we provide a platform for them to reach their individual goals while setting a positive example for others. We emphasize a "team-first" developmental model where every role is valued, teaching our players that individual improvement and collective success are inextricably linked.

A Program for 
Every Player

While our Varsity team competes at the elite level, the Milton girls' hockey program is built to support athletes at every stage of their development. With a robust sub-varsity structure, we ensure there is a place for everyone, from seasoned competitors to those looking to grow their skills in a supportive team environment. By providing high-quality coaching and access to our professional-grade facilities across all levels, we foster a deep love for the game and a sense of belonging for every student who wears the Mustang jersey. This inclusive approach creates a cohesive program where every player has the opportunity to contribute to our collective success.

1st Team: Competing at the highest level, our Varsity squad faces the most rigorous schedule in New England.

2nd Team: Designed for developing athletes, the JV program focuses on sharpening tactical execution and preparing players for the speed and intensity of the Varsity game.

Coaching Staff

Liz Keady-Norton ’03

Head Coach

Coach Keady-Norton '03 returned to Milton Academy in 2024. A standout player at Milton and recipient of the school's Dorothy J. Sullivan Award — recognizing exceptional sportsmanship, leadership, and dedication to athletics — she brings extensive experience as both a coach and a player at the highest levels of the sport.

Coach Keady-Norton previously served as head coach of the women's hockey team at Dartmouth College, leading the program beginning in 2021 and guiding the team to victories over nationally ranked opponents. During her tenure, two players earned ACHA All-American honors, and the entire 21-player roster was named to the ECAC All-Academic team. Earlier in her career, she spent several seasons at Boston University, rising to associate head coach, where seven forwards were selected as Hockey East All-Stars, five matched or surpassed their career-best point totals, and two were named top-10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. She also served as an assistant coach at both Union College and Harvard University.

On the international stage, Coach Keady-Norton has coached with USA Hockey, serving as head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team at the 2024 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship in Switzerland, where the team went undefeated to capture gold. She was head coach again in 2025, leading the team to a silver medal in Finland, and previously served as an assistant coach for the U.S. U18 team in 2023, helping the team earn a bronze medal in Sweden.

A graduate of Princeton University, Coach Keady-Norton was a standout on the Princeton women's hockey team before playing professionally with the Boston Blades of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. She also represented the United States as a member of the U.S. women's national ice hockey team from 2004 to 2008.

At Milton, Coach Keady-Norton coaches girls' varsity hockey, supports student-athlete recruitment, and contributes to the broader athletics program through additional coaching and teaching roles.

Whitney Naslund

Assistant Coach

Coach Naslund brings extensive high-level playing experience and tactical knowledge to the girls' hockey program. Working primarily with the forwards, she focuses on offensive skill development and scoring strategy, drawing from her own background competing at the top levels of the sport.

A former Division I standout at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Coach Naslund was a prolific force for the Engineers, leading the program in scoring in each of her four years and graduating in 2010 as the school's all-time leader in games played. Following her collegiate career, she played professionally for the Boston Blades of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, serving as assistant captain on the 2013 squad that became the first American-based team to capture the Clarkson Cup.

Coach Naslund's impact at Milton extends across all three seasons. In addition to her work on the ice, she coaches cross country in the fall and works with distance runners for track and field in the spring. In 2026, she was named the recipient of the Marijke D. Alsbach Coaching Award, presented annually to a coach who exemplifies outstanding leadership, technical excellence, and an unwavering commitment to the physical and social well-being of their athletes.

Matt Petherick

Assistant Coach

Coach Petherick has been a longtime assistant coach with the Mustangs, bringing a wealth of tactical knowledge and a deep coaching background to the girls' hockey program. Working primarily with the team's defenders, he focuses on developing disciplined, high-IQ play and a strong defensive foundation.

In addition to his work on the ice, Coach Petherick is a member of the History Department, where he teaches in the Upper School. His commitment to the Milton community extends into residential life as House Head of Hathaway House — supporting student-athletes in the classroom, the dormitory, and the rink.

The Milton Academy girls’ hockey program is a perennial contender in the Independent School League and New England prep hockey. Our student-athletes are consistently recognized for their high level of play, leadership, and sportsmanship. We take great pride in our history of team success and the individual accolades that reflect the hard work and character of our players.

A hallmark of the Milton program is its success in preparing student-athletes for the next level. The discipline and skills developed here have allowed many former Mustangs to move on to play at elite collegiate programs at top academic institutions across the country.
