One Standard.

Milton Hockey competes at the highest level of NEPSAC Division I, with a schedule as demanding as any in New England — anchored by the prestigious Flood Marr Holiday Tournament, a cornerstone of the prep calendar that draws NHL and collegiate scouts from across the country. Every game on the Mustang schedule is an opportunity to be seen, tested, and measured against the best competition the region has to offer.

That standard of excellence is the product of two decades of sustained program growth, now carried forward under Head Coach Jim Gaudet's renewed focus on elite performance for the modern game. The results speak for themselves — Mustang alumni currently skate for top-tier programs in Hockey East, the ECAC, the CCHA, and the NESCAC, a testament to a program built to develop players for whatever comes next.

Program Philosophy: Competitiveness. Hockey Sense. Character.

At the core of Milton Hockey is a practice environment built on competition and constant decision-making. Every drill demands perception, adaptability, and competitiveness — the two qualities we believe separate good players from weak ones, not just at the prep level, but at whatever comes next. Technical skills like passing, stickhandling, skating, and shooting develop most effectively in this environment, and that style carries directly into games: players are encouraged to make plays with the puck whenever and wherever possible. Mistakes are treated as a necessary step toward growth, not something to be punished — the result is a style of hockey that's fun to play, fun to coach, and fun to watch, while producing players who are competitive, smart, skilled, and able to adapt to any system they encounter after Milton.

That development is supported year-round by our Athletic Training staff and state-of-the-art Athletic Center — featuring an on-campus rink, weight room, and field house — allowing for daily training that maximizes the developmental window of the teenage years. By encouraging multi-sport participation alongside hockey, we ensure every Mustang graduates stronger, quicker, and more versatile, prepared not just for the next level of hockey, but for the next level of life.

Milton Hockey is built to support every player — regardless of experience, ability, or aspiration. Whether you've played competitively for years, are picking up a stick for the first time, or simply want to be part of a team without the pressure of varsity competition, there is a place for you in this program. Our coaching staff is committed to meeting every athlete where they are, focusing on skill development, tactical understanding, and the love of the game at every level.

Coaching Staff

Jim Gaudet

Head Coach

Coach Gaudet assumed leadership of the Milton Academy Boys Ice Hockey program in 2023, bringing a modern, high-intensity coaching philosophy to one of the most respected programs in the ISL. Before taking the helm at Milton, he served as an assistant coach at Babson College, helping the Beavers capture their first conference championship since 2014.

His coaching pedigree is rooted in elite collegiate hockey — the son of longtime Dartmouth College head coach Bob Gaudet, he grew up immersed in the tactical and developmental world of Ivy League hockey. As a player, Coach Gaudet was a four-year letterwinner and defenseman at Dartmouth, serving as an assistant captain his senior year and helping the Big Green reach the ECAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Beyond the tactical side of the game, Coach Gaudet is a firm believer in developing the whole student-athlete. He brings a relationship-based, mentorship-driven approach to the program, preparing players to transition seamlessly to the NCAA and beyond.

Ryan Black

Assistant Coach

Coach Black brings elite playing experience and a deep understanding of the modern game to the Milton Academy sidelines. A standout forward at Babson College, he earned AHCA All-America East first team honors and was named NEHC Player of the Year in 2022 — helping the Beavers win the NEHC title and their first NCAA tournament win since 2013. Following his graduation from Babson, Coach Black played a grad season at the University of New Hampshire, competing at the NCAA Division I level.

Known for his technical approach to skill development, Coach Black focuses on the nuances of scoring, puck protection, and offensive creativity. He works closely with the Mustangs' forwards to refine the habits necessary to compete in the high-speed environment of the Keller Division, drawing on his own experience bridging the gap from prep and college hockey.

Beyond the tactical side of the game, Coach Black is a mentor who values competitive drive and character — qualities that made him, in the words of his own college coach, "a selfless star" both on and off the ice. His ability to relate to the current generation of athletes through his own high-level playing experience makes him a valuable asset to Coach Gaudet's staff.

Matt McDonald

Assistant Coach

Coach McDonald joined Milton in 2022 as a member of the Mathematics Department and a coach for both the Girls JV Soccer and Boys Hockey programs. A graduate of Deerfield Academy, where he competed in both soccer and hockey, he went on to play collegiate hockey at Hamilton College.

Before arriving at Milton, Coach McDonald spent several years coaching and teaching at the New Canaan Country School and the Fay School. His dual role as a faculty member allows him to support student-athletes holistically — bridging the academic rigor of the classroom with the high-intensity environment of the rink.

The Milton Academy Boys’ Ice Hockey program has a long-standing history of individual and collective achievement within the ISL Keller Division and the NEPSAC. Our student-athletes are consistently recognized not only for their elite skill and competitive drive but also for their commitment to the values of sportsmanship and character that define the Mustang community.
