Centennial Excellence:
The Mustang Basketball Tradition

Milton Academy boys’ basketball is a program on the rise, recently celebrating over 100 years of tradition while achieving record-breaking success on the national stage. Competing in the Independent School League (ISL), one of the nation’s deepest and most talented prep circuits, the Mustangs have solidified their reputation as a premier New England powerhouse. The program reached new heights in recent years, including a historic run to the 2023 NEPSAC Class A Championship. This trajectory continued through the 2025–2026 season, where a young and resilient squad matured quickly to finish 17–8, earning the 4th seed in the highly competitive NEPSAC playoffs. Whether competing on the iconic parquet of the Boston Garden for the Andrew James Lawson Foundation Invitational or breaking school records for wins and defensive efficiency, the program continues to set a gold standard for excellence.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Lamar Reddicks—a Milton native and "basketball lifer" with 18 years at the Academy following a coaching career at Harvard and Boston University—the program is built on the motto: “Surround yourself with good people and great things happen.” Coach Reddicks and his staff focus on molding the team into a family, teaching players to navigate both the victories and the setbacks of the game and life. We view basketball as a transformational journey rather than a transactional sport, providing a roadmap for better decision-making and deeper, more meaningful experiences that extend far beyond the final buzzer.

Character, Community, and the "Next Play" Mentality

Our philosophy centers on authenticity and accountability. We seek the rare student-athlete who thrives under high academic pressure and elite athletic expectations — surrounded by like-minded peers who push one another to excel. Central to our coaching is the "next play" mentality: the ability to move past a mistake and immediately refocus on the next opportunity to impact the game. Character is revealed not in how you handle a win, but in how you respond to adversity.

Community engagement is equally central to the Mustang experience. Players run basketball clinics for local youth, travel into Boston to read to students in grades K–4, and host those same students at home games for pre-game activities. The team also maintains a long-standing relationship with the Special Olympics, volunteering and competing in events that reflect a deep commitment to respect and inclusivity. At Milton, our players understand that being a Mustang means being looked up to — both literally and figuratively — by the next generation.

This tiered approach ensures that every Mustang, from elite Varsity recruits to those refining their skills on our sub-varsity squads, has a clear pathway to grow. Every player in the program has access to our professional-grade facilities and is a valued member of a community that supports their growth from their first day on campus to long after graduation.

Lamar Reddicks

Head Coach

Coach Reddicks is currently in his 18th year at Milton Academy, where he serves as both Director of Athletics and Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball program. A native of Milton, his roots in the community run deep — a standout member of Milton High School's 1996 state championship team, he was inducted into the Milton High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, followed by the enshrinement of his championship team in 2010.

Coach Reddicks began his collegiate playing career as a captain of the men's basketball team at Bentley University before spending eight years in the college coaching ranks as an assistant coach for the men's programs at both Harvard University and Boston University — experiences that shaped his philosophy on the successful integration of high-level academics and elite athletics.

Since arriving at Milton, Coach Reddicks has transformed the Mustangs into a New England powerhouse. Named NEPSAC Coach of the Year in 2011, 2018, 2019, and 2023, his leadership reached a historic milestone in 2023 when he guided the program to the NEPSAC Class A Championship. Above all, Coach Reddicks takes pride in the culture he has built — one rooted in mentorship, authenticity, and the "next play" mentality that defines every Mustang who steps on the court.

Rob McGuirk

Assistant Coach

Coach McGuirk is in his 12th season as an assistant coach for the Mustangs, bringing over a decade of continuity and expertise to the Boys Varsity Basketball program. A key member of Coach Reddicks' staff, he has played an integral role in the program's sustained success — including multiple deep NEPSAC playoff runs and the 2023 Class A Championship — contributing to tactical preparation and player development at every level.

Beyond the bench, Coach McGuirk serves as a member of the Milton Academy Physical Education faculty, allowing him to connect with student-athletes throughout the school day and reinforce the program's commitment to character, fundamentals, and academic accountability. His deep familiarity with the ISL landscape and his investment in the whole student make him an invaluable presence within the Mustang program.

Drew Thibeault ‘19

Assistant Coach

Drew Thibeault returned to the Mustangs’ bench as an assistant coach, bringing a deep-rooted understanding of the Milton Academy basketball culture and a passion for player development. A 2019 graduate of the Academy, Coach Thibeault was a standout guard for the Mustangs, known for his leadership on the floor and his commitment to the program’s values during his time as a student-athlete.

Following his successful high school career, during which he was a twice-named All-Scholastic recipient and a key contributor to the Mustangs' competitive presence in the ISL, he went on to play at the collegiate level for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). At RPI, he competed in the Liberty League, further refining his tactical knowledge and understanding of high-level competition.

Now back at his alma mater, Coach Thibeault works closely with the guard unit, focusing on skill execution and the technical precision he championed as a player. His unique perspective as a former Mustang allows him to serve as a bridge for current student-athletes, helping them navigate the balance of elite prep athletics and high academic expectations. A true member of the Milton community, he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of players to achieve success both on the court and in the classroom.

Milton Academy Boys Basketball has established itself as one of the premier programs in New England prep school athletics — marked by collective championships, consistent individual recognition, and a sustained presence at the top of the NEPSAC and ISL. We take pride in the players who have exemplified the hard work, sportsmanship, and leadership required to earn accolades at the conference and regional level, and in the culture that continues to produce them.
