The Mustang Diamond: Milton Softball

Milton Softball is defined by a commitment to the fundamentals, a relentless work ethic, and a deep-rooted sense of Mustang pride. Competing in the highly selective Independent School League (ISL), our program is designed to maximize every player’s potential through a balance of high-level athletic intensity and a genuine love for the game. We believe that when players trust one another and enjoy the "grind" of practice, they perform at their absolute best.

At Milton, we understand that success in May is built in March. A hallmark of our program is our annual Spring Training trip to Florida, where the team travels to Orlando to compete in state-of-the-art facilities with KSA Events. This week of high-level play against opponents from across New England, New York, and New Jersey is vital for our preparation.

Milton Softball has a documented history of competing at the highest levels of New England prep athletics. We challenge for the top of the standings and seek out the toughest competition in the region. The team is a recurring invitee to the Big East Invitational, hosted by Brooks and Andover, where we compete against the best of the best in the New England prep circuit. Over the past several years, we have successfully seen multiple players recruited to compete at the collegiate level, a testament to the development and exposure athletes receive within our program.

Program Philosophy

The Mustang philosophy is simple: master the fundamentals and the results will follow. We expect every player to be committed to individual skill development, ensuring they have the tools to play to the best of their ability. However, we also know that an engaged athlete is a successful one. We prioritize making practices high-energy and fun, fostering an environment where players are excited to show up and work hard. Our program emphasizes clear communication to build the trust necessary for high-pressure ISL moments. As shown in recent seasons, our players are defined by their resilience and their ability to step up, fill gaps, and support one another through adversity. We measure success not just by the win-loss column, but by the strides we take in building the program's future and the passion our athletes bring to the field.

Softball at Milton is a community of impressive young women who lead in the classroom, on the stage, and across multiple sports. We take immense pride in our multi-talented student-athletes—from class leaders to talented musicians—who bring their diverse perspectives to our team culture. Our Varsity squad acts as our flagship competitive team, competing in the ISL and prestigious regional invitationals. For those looking to sharpen their skills and prepare for the next level, our Junior Varsity team offers a dynamic developmental environment focused on individual growth and team chemistry. We have a place for you on one of these teams.

RJ Maturo

Head Coach

Coach Maturo leads the Milton Academy softball program with a storied career and a reputation for building championship-caliber teams from the ground up. He joined the Mustangs following nearly a decade at Millis High School, where he inherited a program that had lost 57 consecutive games and transformed it into a perennial contender. In his fourth year, he led Millis to the MIAA State Finals — one of seven tournament appearances during his tenure — and was recognized as MetroWest Coach of the Year twice along the way.

His deep roots in the local coaching scene include a highly successful 17-year tenure as head coach at Milton High School, where he led the Wildcats to seven Bay State League titles and was named Boston Globe Coach of the Year in 2002. A versatile athletic leader, Coach Maturo is also a certified football and basketball official with the MIAA, bringing a comprehensive understanding of student-athlete development to everything he does. He attended Quincy College and draws on decades of multi-sport expertise to emphasize structural organization, fundamental mastery, and the mental toughness required to compete in the ISL. Under his guidance, Milton Softball continues to build on a foundation of hard work, technical precision, and a deep respect for the game.

Amy Hickey

Assistant Coach

Coach Hickey is a pillar of the Milton Academy athletic community, bringing decades of elite competitive experience and leadership to the softball program. Her journey with the Mustangs began in 2001, first as a volunteer and then as a pitching consultant and assistant coach, before serving as Head Coach from 2003 through 2022 — a tenure defined by stability, technical excellence, and the mentorship of countless student-athletes.

Coach Hickey's philosophy is grounded in her career at the College of the Holy Cross, where she was a four-year starting pitcher, leading hitter, and base-stealer for the Crusaders. Her senior season alone included 28 complete games, earning her team MVP, Captain, and MAAC Academic All-American honors. Beyond softball, she has spent 15 years as the Varsity Field Hockey Goalkeeper coach and over a decade assisting in middle school and girls' JV ice hockey — a multi-sport background that brings a unique depth and versatility to everything she contributes to Milton Athletics.

Haley Dutton

Assistant Coach

Coach Dutton brings a wealth of tactical knowledge and a modern competitive perspective to the Milton Academy softball program. As an assistant coach, she focuses on the nuances of positional play and the mental approach required to succeed in the high-pressure environment of the ISL — working closely with Coach Maturo to design high-energy practices that prioritize fundamental mastery while keeping players engaged and motivated.

Beyond the field, Coach Dutton serves in the Milton Academy Admissions Office, giving her a unique understanding of the full student-athlete journey — from prospective student to varsity leader. Her team-first coaching philosophy, grounded in trust, communication, and resilience, ensures that the softball program remains an integral and valued part of the broader Milton community.

Our alumni are a vital part of our program’s soul, representing a diverse network of leaders who carry the resilience, communication skills, and work ethic forged on the Milton fields into the world's most competitive arenas. We celebrate our former players not only for their athletic achievements but for the impressive young women they have become—musicians, scholars, and leaders making a difference in their communities.
