Excellence in Every Swing

Milton Academy Girls Tennis has established itself as one of the most dominant programs in New England prep school athletics. Competing in the Independent School League, the Mustangs claimed seven consecutive ISL Championships between 2013 and 2019 — a streak defined by undefeated regular seasons and a standard of excellence that few programs in the region have matched.

The program's success extends well beyond league play. Milton claimed three consecutive NEPSAC Class A New England Championships in 2014, 2015, and 2016, frequently securing titles through high-pressure victories against the region's most elite competition. Underpinning it all is a year-round commitment to athletic preparation — ensuring the Mustangs arrive each spring strategically sound, technically precise, and ready to compete at the highest level.

Program Philosophy: Discipline and Collective Resilience

The Milton Girls’ Tennis philosophy is built on the integration of individual mastery and team-wide collaboration. While the sport requires intense personal focus, our program operates on the principle that the team environment is a critical driver of individual growth. We challenge our student-athletes to embrace the "great lessons of athletics": preparation, risk-taking, and the ability to win and lose with dignity.

Beyond the baseline, the culture of the team is defined by a sense of shared adventure. We believe that champions are made in the moments between matches—whether it's through the energy of long-standing team traditions or the bonding that occurs when the squad travels together for preseason training. These experiences away from campus allow our athletes to build a foundation of trust that translates directly to the court. At Milton, high-stakes competition and genuine fun are not mutually exclusive; rather, the laughter shared during travel and the rituals passed down through the years are what fuel our collective resilience.

The Milton Academy Girls’ Tennis program provides an inclusive structure designed to support athletes at every level of the sport. Milton is committed to the development of the "whole athlete," providing expert guidance from a staff of experienced coaches across three teams. Whether a student is a nationally-ranked recruit or an emerging player, the expectation remains consistent: to compete with pride, demonstrate resilience, and contribute to a community defined by its shared passion for the game.

Utilizing an expansive facility that includes 13 outdoor and 4 indoor courts, the program ensures that every student has the resources required for continuous development.

Coaching Staff

Troy Crichlow ’99

Head Coach

Coach Crichlow returned to his alma mater, bringing an elite competitive pedigree and a professionalized approach to player development. A 2004 graduate of Georgetown University, his journey began at age three at the Sportsmen's Tennis Center in Dorchester — leading to a storied junior career that included multiple ATA National Championships and an induction as the first-ever player into the NETA Hall of Fame. As a standout at Milton Academy, he led the Mustangs from the #1 singles position to Division, New England, and East Coast titles before continuing his career at the Division I level, where he served as a two-time team MVP and #1 singles player for the Georgetown Hoyas.

Coach Crichlow's coaching career is marked by a rare ability to develop athletes for the global stage — mentoring players ranked in the USTA National Top 20, athletes with international ITF rankings, and competitors who have competed at Junior Grand Slams and professional events. In 2017, he received the prestigious William Freedman Award for outstanding contribution to junior development in New England. He serves as Chair of the USTA New England National Selection Committee and as a board member for the USTA New England Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Since taking the helm of the Milton Girls Varsity program, Coach Crichlow has overseen one of the most dominant eras in school history — six consecutive ISL titles and three consecutive NEPSAC Championships. He is also the founder of the Crichlow Summer Tennis Academy, hosted at Milton, reflecting a commitment to growing the game and developing players that extends well beyond the spring season.

At Milton, we take immense pride in the fact that our athletes are as formidable in the classroom as they are on the baseline. Our graduates are recognized across the national tennis landscape not only for their sophisticated approach to the game but also for their commitment to leadership and integrity. Our alumni have gone on to compete for some of the most prestigious academic and athletic institutions in the nation. From the high-stakes environment of Division I programs to the elite competition of the NESCAC, Milton graduates continue to lead and excel long after their final match at the Academy.
