A Standard of Consistency and Growth

Milton Academy Boys Track & Field is defined by a commitment to technical mastery, physical durability, and a collective drive for improvement. Competing in the ISL and NEPSAC Class A, the Mustangs balance elite-level performance with a focus on long-term athletic development — training athletes across all 17 events with the composure and precision required to compete against the region's best.

The program's recent history reflects that standard. ISL Championships in 2015, 2016, and 2024, followed by a third-place finish at the NEPSAC Division I Championships in 2025 — one of the highest finishes in school history — speak to a depth of talent that goes well beyond individual standout performances. At Milton, success on the track and in the field is built on what we call the science of the sport: a training environment rooted in data, technique, and the deliberate pursuit of incremental improvement across every discipline.

Program Philosophy: Progress through Persistence

At Milton, results are measured individually but progress is achieved collectively. We challenge every athlete to embrace the discipline required for incremental breakthroughs — the extra rep in the weight room, the technical adjustment in the throwing circle, the mental toughness required to hold form through the final turn of a relay. These are not small things. They are the difference between good and great.

Our culture is built on shared accountability and a lineage of leadership, where veteran athletes mentor newcomers, and the standard is passed from one generation of Mustangs to the next. The lessons of this sport — resilience in the face of adversity, the focus required for a personal best, the reliability required of a relay team — are the same traits that define success in the classroom and the community. We compete with quiet confidence and a relentless work ethic, representing Milton Academy with integrity in every heat and every flight.

Developmental Pathways: From Foundation to Finish Line

Teams: 1st Team

Our program is structured to support every athlete, regardless of their previous experience. By utilizing our premier outdoor facilities and a professionalized strength and conditioning curriculum, we ensure that every Mustang has the tools to reach his full potential.

Whether an athlete is a seasoned sprinter looking to shave fractions of a second or a multi-sport athlete seeking to build explosive power for other seasons, the track program provides a home. We take pride in our ability to develop talent into championship-caliber performers, ensuring that every member of the roster contributes to the tradition of Milton Track & Field.

Coaching Staff

Steve Darling

Head Coach, Throws, Strength & Conditioning

Coach Darling brings over two decades of expertise in athletic development and performance to the Milton Academy Track & Field program. He serves as Head Coach of the Boys Varsity team, oversees shot put and discus for both the boys' and girls' programs, and has served as Milton's Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Assistant Athletic Trainer since 2002. He holds certifications as a Licensed Athletic Trainer (LATC) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

Over his 15-year coaching tenure, Coach Darling has been instrumental in the Boys' team securing three ISL Championships (2015, 2016, and 2024), the Girls' program finishing in the top three at the ISL Championships four times, and a third-place finish at the NEPSAC Division I Championships in 2025 — one of the highest finishes in program history. His technical expertise in the throwing events has produced school records in shot put and discus across both programs. In recognition of his broader impact on Milton Athletics, Coach Darling was named Massachusetts State Strength Coach of the Year by the National High School Strength Coaches Association.

At Milton, Coach Darling is also a member of the Hathaway House Dorm Faculty Team, reflecting a commitment to student development that extends well beyond the track.

Chris Lewis '15

Assistant Coach, Sprints, Jumps & Relays

Coach Lewis is a 2015 graduate of Milton Academy who returns to lead the Girls Varsity Track & Field program with a deep understanding of what it means to compete as a Mustang. During his time at Milton, he was a premier multi-sport athlete — captaining the boys' soccer team to an undefeated regular season and earning Boston Globe ISL Defensive Player of the Year honors, while on the track setting school records in the long jump and 4x100m relay, serving as team captain, and playing a pivotal role in leading the program to its first ISL Championship in over three decades. He was also a recipient of the inaugural ISL Award of Excellence, recognizing his athletic ability, sportsmanship, and contributions to the Milton community.

Following Milton, Coach Lewis had a highly successful career at Amherst College, where he helped the soccer program capture its first NCAA National Championship in 2015. Since returning to Milton and taking the helm of the Girls Track & Field program, he has overseen a period of historic achievement — including multiple school records, numerous ISL and NEPSAC individual championships, and an undefeated regular season in 2024–2025, the first time the program had achieved that milestone in over 25 years.

Beyond the track, Coach Lewis serves as Director of Residential Life in the Upper School, Assistant Coach for the Boys Varsity Soccer team, and faculty advisor for Onyx and the Caribbean Student Association — reflecting the same commitment to community and mentorship that defines his coaching philosophy.

Jill Wilder

Assistant Coach, Mid-Distance & Distance

Coach Wilder joined the Milton Academy coaching staff in 2022, serving as Head Coach of the Boys Cross Country team and leading distance training for the Track & Field program. Known for joining her athletes on training runs to provide real-time feedback and motivation, she brings an inclusive, goal-driven approach to the endurance programs that has quickly made her a fixture on Milton's trails and track.

A former Division II distance runner at Bentley University, Coach Wilder competed in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track for four years, earning All-Region recognition during her collegiate career. Her coaching philosophy is a direct reflection of her competitive background — intentional, communicative, and built on the understanding that individual breakthroughs happen within a strong team culture.

Liz Keady-Norton

Assistant Coach, Sprints

A graduate of Princeton University and standout ice hockey athlete for the Tigers, Coach Keady-Norton has built one of the most decorated coaching résumés in New England. She currently serves as Milton Academy's Head Ice Hockey Coach and previously led the Dartmouth College Women's Ice Hockey program, with additional coaching experience at Harvard University, Union College, and Boston University. At the national level, she serves as Head Coach of the USA U-18 Women's Ice Hockey Team, leading the program to a gold medal at the 2024 IIHF World Championships in Switzerland.

At Milton, Coach Keady-Norton translates her experience in high-performance Division I athletics into a sprint coaching philosophy defined by disciplined training, technical precision, and a championship-caliber mindset.

Specializing in the short sprints — 100m through 400m — he works with Mustang athletes to develop the explosive starts, drive-phase mechanics, and top-end speed required to compete at the highest level of prep athletics.

A former standout at UMass Dartmouth, Coach Stewart competed in the 200m and 400m at the NCAA Division III level, giving him firsthand insight into the technical demands of competitive sprinting. At Milton, he is known for his high-energy coaching style and his ability to push athletes to find another gear — building the mental focus and attention to detail that produce breakthroughs on the track.

Holt Sihvonen

Assistant Coach, Throws

Coach Sihvonen brings elite javelin expertise and a distinguished collegiate career to the Milton Academy throwing program, working with Mustang athletes across both the boys' and girls' programs to master the biomechanics and explosive power required for success in the field events.

A standout at Bentley University, Coach Sihvonen set the program's school record in the javelin at 214'10" and was named Northeast-10 Field Athlete of the Year. He earned NCAA Division II All-American honors in the javelin and was a consistent presence at the national level throughout his collegiate career.

At Milton, Coach Sihvonen is known for breaking down complex throwing mechanics into clear, actionable technique cues — making him an effective mentor for both novice and experienced throwers. His emphasis on technical precision and specialized strength development ensures that Milton's javelin athletes consistently compete at the highest level of ISL and NEPSAC competition.
