A Tradition of Heart and Speed: Milton XC: Build on Heart

The girls' cross country program at Milton is one of the most respected in the Independent School League (ISL), dedicated to instilling a competitive spirit and a genuine love for the sport in every athlete. We take pride in our long and storied history, consistently producing runners who rank among the finest in the league. However, the true measure of our success isn't just found in the standings — it's found in our culture. We are an intentionally inclusive program that welcomes runners of all ability levels, from seasoned veterans to those who have never raced before, ensuring every girl reaches her fullest potential on the trail.

The MAXC Approach: Training for the Long Run

Our philosophy centers on the holistic health of the student-athlete. We believe that peak performance is only possible when balanced with proper nutrition, healthy sleep habits, strength training, and a positive mental mindset. Our weekly training is dynamic and designed to keep athletes engaged and injury-free:

The Routine: Varsity athletes train five days a week with races on Saturdays.

The Work: Our regimen includes two speed-focused sessions, hill work, and tempo runs to build racing sharpness.

The Miles: We utilize the beautiful suburb of Milton for distance runs, alongside regular trips to our home course at Cunningham Park and the scenic trails of the nearby Blue Hills Reservation.

Our ultimate goal is to foster a lifelong love of running. Nothing makes us prouder than hearing from alumni who continue to chase milestones—like recently when former runners reached out to share their excitement after completing the Boston Marathon and the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

A Culture of Joy

Milton Academy offers two levels of competitive cross country — 1st Team and 2nd Team — ensuring every runner has a place to grow into the sport.

Our season is anchored by cherished traditions—from high-energy inter-squad "Sing Offs" and weekly spirit days to celebratory ice cream runs and team dinners. These moments turn teammates into family, ensuring that every runner, whether a veteran or a novice, feels an immediate sense of belonging.

From restorative yoga sessions to shared cookie swaps after a long Saturday race, we prioritize the joy of the journey. At Milton, the finish line is just one part of the experience; the lasting friendships and the supportive community built along the way are what truly define our program.

Coaching Staff

Scott Huntoon

Head Coach

Coach Huntoon joined the Milton Academy coaching staff in 2002 and has served as Head Coach of the Girls Cross Country program since 2011. A lifelong runner, he attended Wittenberg University, where he competed in both cross country and track for four years and served as a two-time captain of the men's cross country team.

With over two decades of experience at Milton, Coach Huntoon remains an active competitor in the local running community, frequently racing in 5Ks and half marathons throughout the year. His deep knowledge of the ISL and his commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive team culture have been instrumental in the program's long-standing success.

Her experience coaching across different seasons allows her to connect with Milton athletes year-round, emphasizing multi-sport athleticism and a positive team mindset — whether on the ice or the trail. This year, she was named the recipient of the Marijke D. Alsbach Coaching Award, presented annually to a coach who exemplifies outstanding leadership, technical excellence, and an unwavering commitment to the physical and social well-being of their athletes.
