Milton Field Hockey: A Program on the Rise

Field hockey at Milton competes in the Independent School League against some of the premier programs in New England, with a tradition built on skill, intensity, and a deep commitment to the game. The program's recent trajectory speaks for itself — a hard-earned return to the NEPSAC New England Playoffs in 2024 marked a meaningful step forward, reinforcing a standard built on competing at the highest level while maintaining genuine sportsmanship.

That balance — competitive drive paired with respect for the game — is what defines Milton Field Hockey. The goal each season isn't just to win matches, but to leave the program stronger than it was found, building toward sustained success in one of the toughest conferences in New England.

Program Philosophy: Commitment and Community

We believe that the best athletes are those who are committed to excellence in all areas of their lives. Milton Field Hockey players are expected to work hard and lead both in the classroom and on the field. Our program provides a professionalized athletic experience, supported by tactical film review and a specialized strength and conditioning regimen. While we push our athletes to prepare for the "next level," we never lose sight of the joy of the sport. The program is anchored by cherished traditions—from Friday night team dinners and gameday dress to our "Play 4 the Cure" game and our 3v3 faculty-student tournament. These shared experiences ensure that the unity found on the field translates into lifelong friendships off of it.

Building the Program at Every Level

Opportunities: 1st Team, 2nd Team, 3rd Team

Milton Field Hockey is built to support athletes at every level, not just those competing for a varsity roster spot. Whether you've never picked up a stick before or you're looking for a competitive, lower-pressure environment to develop your skills, the program offers a structured path to learn the game, build confidence, and improve season over season.

Coaching at every level focuses on the fundamentals — stick skills, positioning, and game sense — ensuring that every player, regardless of experience, gets the individual attention needed to grow. For many athletes, this is where a lifelong love of field hockey begins.

Coaching Staff

Kelcie Finn

Head Coach

Coach Finn serves as Head Coach of the Milton Academy field hockey program. A veteran of the NEPSAC, she brings six seasons of experience as a varsity head coach and eight overall within the conference.

Coach Finn's coaching is informed by her own experience as a standout dual-sport athlete at Trinity College, where she competed in both field hockey and ice hockey. Her background as a high-level collegiate player allows her to bridge the gap between technical development and the competitive mindset needed for success in the ISL. At Milton, she also serves as an Associate Director of Admission, providing a unique perspective on the student-athlete experience and a deep commitment to the growth of her players both on the field and within the campus community.

Molly Purcell '09

Assistant Coach

Coach Purcell, a Milton Academy alumna from the Class of 2009, returns to the sidelines with a deep understanding of the school's athletic culture and traditions. Following her time as a standout student-athlete at Milton, she went on to compete in both basketball and lacrosse at Mount Holyoke College.

Coach Purcell's coaching expertise spans multiple seasons, as she also leads the basketball and lacrosse programs. She additionally serves as Associate Athletic Director, playing a vital role in the daily operations and strategic growth of Milton Athletics — a dual perspective as both a former player and current administrator that allows her to mentor athletes effectively, rooted in the values of her alma mater.

Amy Griffin

Assistant Coach

Coach Griffin brings championship-level playing experience to the Milton Academy field hockey program. A standout midfielder at Middlebury College, she was a key contributor to one of the most dominant runs in collegiate field hockey history, helping the Panthers win four consecutive NCAA Division III National Championships from 2021 to 2024. A two-time NFHCA National Player of the Year and two-time First-Team All-American, she also holds Middlebury's career assists record.

Her experience competing at the highest level of Division III athletics gives Milton's players a firsthand perspective on what it takes to build and sustain a winning culture. Coach Griffin's coaching focuses on tactical execution and a championship mindset, helping athletes develop the skills and resilience needed to compete in the ISL and beyond.
