Eleven Titles, One Standard:
Milton Boys Soccer

The Milton Academy Boys’ Soccer program is defined by a storied history of championship-level performance and a deep-rooted commitment to the development of the whole athlete. Our philosophy is built upon a foundation of sportsmanship, technical mastery, and an enduring love for the game. We aim to challenge every player to reach their highest potential—not only as competitors on the field but as scholars in the classroom and leaders within the community.

The program has established itself as a premier force in the Independent School League (ISL) and New England prep soccer. In 2023, the team defended their ISL Championship—the 11th in program history—while securing the Class A New England Championship for the third time. This follows a decade of remarkable consistency, including a historic 22-0 undefeated season and regular appearances in the Class A New England Tournament finals. At Milton, we don't just compete for titles; we compete to uphold a standard of excellence that defines the Samba legacy.

We trust the brand of soccer we play: technically skilled, tactically disciplined, and distinctly Milton. Whether competing in front of a home crowd or training on the turf, our athletes embody the school's "Dare to be True" ethos — forming bonds within this program that last long after the final whistle.

Milton Boys Soccer is more than a single team — it's a four-tier system designed to give players of every ability level a coaching-intensive experience. By fielding four competitive squads, the program ensures every student has a place to play and grow.

That structure is built on a consistent philosophy and shared terminology across all four levels, allowing athletes to learn the systems they'll need to progress through the program — guided at every step by experienced coaches invested in their development.

Coaching Staff

Chris Kane

Head Coach, Boys’ Varsity Soccer

Coach Kane serves as the head boys' varsity soccer coach at Milton Academy. In his first year at the helm, the Mustangs were awarded the Fritz Weidergott Trophy as the most improved team in the league. The team has since qualified for the Class A New England Tournament in each of the last eleven seasons.

In 2015, the team finished with an unblemished 22-0-0 record, winning both the ISL Championship (Gummere Cup) and the Class A New England Championship (Stewart Cup), and earning the ISL Sportsmanship Award (Blood Trophy) as voted by league players and coaches. That year, Coach Kane was named Massachusetts State Coach of the Year. More recently, the team won the 2022, 2023, and 2024 ISL Championships and reached the Class A New England Tournament final in each of the last three seasons, capturing the title in 2023. Coach Kane was named the 2023 Boys Prep School Coach of the Year by New England Soccer Journal, and in 2022 was selected as one of four coaches for the High School All-American Game. In 2014, he received the Marijke D. Alsbach Coaching Award, presented annually at Milton for outstanding coaching and dedication to student-athletes. He has also served as president of the ISL soccer coaches.

At Milton since 2005, Coach Kane serves as Director of Financial Aid. Before arriving, he coached boys' varsity soccer at Cheshire Academy, and he holds both National and Advanced National Diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A graduate of Phillips Academy Andover, where he was named the Boston Globe New England Prep Player of the Year in 1998, he went on to captain the soccer team at Amherst College — playing all four years while also competing in lacrosse and squash — and holds a Master of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Chris Lewis '15

Assistant Coach, Boys’ Varsity Soccer

Coach Lewis serves as Director of Residential Life and assistant coach of the varsity soccer team at Milton. During his tenure, he has helped lead the team to four ISL Championships, four New England Class A Championship final appearances, and one New England Class A Championship.

A Milton alumnus and former captain, Coach Lewis was a standout leader and athlete during his playing days — as a senior, he helped guide the team to an undefeated regular season and was named the Boston Globe ISL Defensive Player of the Year. He went on to a highly successful four-year career at Amherst College, where he helped the program earn its first and only National Championship in the fall of 2015. At Milton, Coach Lewis also serves as head coach of the girls' track and field team, faculty advisor for Onyx and the Caribbean Student Association, and a dorm parent in Hathaway House.

Shawn Allien

Assistant Coach, Boys’ Varsity Soccer

Coach Allien joined the program in 2021 and has been an invaluable member to the coaching staff during his tenure with the Mustangs. Since his arrival, the team has won three ISL championships while also competing in three consecutive New England Finals. From Medford, Massachusetts, he was part of a great Medford High School team where he was a two-time GBL All-Star. Coach Allien attended Franklin Pierce University before finishing his academic and collegiate career playing at UMass Amherst in 2021. He currently works in the finance industry and continues to play competitively.

Ryan Manning ’19

Assistant Coach, Boys’ Varsity Soccer

Manning '19 returns to Milton this fall as an assistant coach in the boys soccer program. A native of Belchertown, Massachusetts, Manning was a standout goalkeeper and team captain during his time on campus, earning All-ISL recognition. After graduating in 2019, he went on to play at Bates College, where he competed for the Bobcats' NESCAC varsity program. In his 2021 season, Manning started six matches in goal, going 4-2 while recording shutouts and posting strong performances including five-save outings against Hamilton and Eastern Nazarene.

Milton Academy Boys’ Soccer has long been a benchmark for excellence in New England prep athletics. Our program’s success is built on a foundation of technical discipline, tactical intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to the team. Over the decades, the Mustangs have consistently challenged for the top of the Independent School League (ISL), earning a reputation for producing high-level talent and championship-caliber teams.
