Milton XC: A Legacy of Inclusivity

At MAXC, we believe that the best way to fall in love with running is through the process of getting better together. The cross country team is widely recognized as one of the most welcoming communities on campus, providing a space where athletes find a "family in every sense of the word." Whether you are an All-ISL senior chasing course records or an 8th grader who has never laced up racing flats before, our program is designed to allow every student to train, compete, and grow.

This culture of inclusivity has consistently translated into success on the course. Our program remains a formidable force in the Independent School League, recently securing a top-five finish at the ISL Championship race. This competitive drive is fueled by a strong core of dedicated upperclassmen and a rising group of younger talent, all supported by a captaincy that prioritizes a positive and inclusive team culture. We view cross country as a masterclass in dedication, where the shared effort of the trail builds many of our students' most meaningful high school relationships.

The MAXC Training Philosophy

At Milton, the belief is simple: the best way to fall in love with running is by getting better together. The cross country program is built on a culture that welcomes runners at every level — from varsity veterans chasing personal records to first-time freshmen who have never raced competitively. Training is structured so that every athlete, regardless of where they start, has a path to improve and a team to improve alongside.

The Routine
Varsity athletes train five days a week, with races held on Saturdays.

The Work
The training regimen includes two speed-focused sessions, hill work, and tempo runs designed to build racing sharpness.

The Miles
Distance runs make use of the suburb of Milton itself, along with regular trips to the team's home course at Cunningham Park and the scenic trails of the nearby Blue Hills Reservation.

A Program for
Every Runner

Milton Academy offers two levels of competitive cross country — 1st Team and 2nd Team — ensuring every runner has a place to grow into the sport.

The MAXC program supports athletes across all levels of experience and interest, ensuring that everyone has a place on the starting line. Our athletes are the quintessential Milton student-athletes; the discipline of the trail often leads to their best academic performances. Whether they are singing in a cappella groups, performing in the orchestra, or serving as peer counselors, our runners learn to balance a demanding schedule with the rewarding release of a daily run.

Coaching Staff

Jill Wilder

Head Coach

Coach Wilder joined Milton Academy in 2022 and took the helm as Head Coach of the Boys Cross Country program in 2023. She also serves as a distance coach for the Track & Field program, providing continuity for Milton's runners throughout the year. Her coaching philosophy centers on respect, intentionality, and team inclusivity, and she remains a fixture on the trails, joining the team on most training runs.

A former standout Division II athlete, Coach Wilder ran cross country and indoor/outdoor track at Bentley College, earning multiple NCAA All-Region honors. Outside of coaching, she is a certified yoga sculpt instructor — a skill set she brings to the team's recovery and mobility sessions.

Honors & Awards

Milton Boys Cross Country has built a tradition of steady individual development within one of the most competitive conferences in New England. Beyond the Blue & Orange: XC Alumni

The MAXC program is designed to build the endurance and mental fortitude necessary for success at the next level. While we take pride in preparing our student-athletes for the rigors of collegiate athletics, our ultimate goal is to foster a lifelong passion for the sport.

Whether our graduates go on to compete for NCAA programs or lead their campus running clubs, they carry the discipline and community-first mindset of Milton with them. MAXC alumni remain a vital part of our program’s legacy, proving that the miles run on our courses are just the beginning of a lifelong journey.
