Community Engagement Programs & Partnerships at Milton Academy

At Milton Academy, community engagement is central to how students learn to lead with empathy, integrity, and purpose. Our Community Engagement Programs and Partnerships (CEPP) connect students with meaningful service opportunities on campus, across Greater Boston, and beyond—helping them develop a lifelong commitment to civic responsibility and social impact.

Through hands-on partnerships with local organizations and schools, Milton students work alongside educators, nonprofit leaders, and community members to address real-world challenges while gaining perspective, confidence, and leadership skills.

Volunteer in Greater Boston

Milton students may participate in weekly community engagement programs that support:

  • Local public schools and youth enrichment programs
  • Adult English language learning initiatives
  • Residences serving elderly and disabled community members
  • Food security and housing organizations
  • Health and wellness programs

These sustained partnerships allow students to build relationships, understand community needs, and contribute in thoughtful, consistent ways.

Events and Traditions

Each year, Milton hosts a range of on-campus community engagement events that bring students, faculty, families, and neighbors together in service, including:

  • Special Olympics tournaments
  • American Red Cross blood drives
  • Hunger awareness programming
  • Holiday giving initiatives
  • Community Engagement days for local service

These traditions reflect Milton’s commitment to service as a shared experience—and an essential part of student life.

Service-Learning Trips

In addition to local partnerships, Milton offers an out-of-state service-learning trip during spring break and in June, giving students the opportunity to engage with communities beyond Greater Boston while deepening their understanding of social and environmental issues through immersive, collaborative work. Recent destinations have included Navajo Nation (New Mexico), Oklahoma (Cherokee Nation), and New Orleans.

Community Engagement and Academic Connection

For students interested in combining academics with community impact, Milton’s History and Social Sciences Department offers a service-learning elective, Activism for Justice in a Digital World.

Open to students in Grades 10 through 12, this half course pairs a weekly placement at a local partner organization with readings, reflective journaling, and project-based learning focused on topics such as:

  • Environmental justice
  • Food and housing insecurity
  • Public health
  • Education
  • Immigration

Through coursework and direct engagement, students examine complex global and local issues while learning how thoughtful action can create meaningful change.
