Ayer Observatory

A white observatory dome sits atop a grassy hill, surrounded by vibrant yellow trees and lush greenery in the background.

Built in 1992, the Ayer Observatory is one of Milton’s most distinctive facilities, a rare feature for an independent school.

Paired with a portable planetarium, the observatory allows students and visitors to explore the universe firsthand, deepening classroom learning and sparking a sense of wonder.

Inside its twin domes, the observatory houses a five-inch Clark refractor and a 9-inch Takahashi reflector, along with several portable telescopes and binoculars for group viewing. Eight piers just outside of the observatory provide smaller, portable telescopes for larger group use. This state-of-the-art equipment allows students to observe comets, galaxies, planets, and the moon. The planetarium allows students to view the night sky from different seasons and locations around the world, providing a deeper understanding of astronomy’s cultural and scientific dimensions.

The observatory also serves as a vibrant community hub. Science faculty regularly host open observatory hours for the Milton community and frequently open the facility to the general public during astronomical events—partnering with local schools, scout troops and other organizations. Similarly, the Astronomy Club hosts monthly open houses for students, families, and neighbors. Milton Academy takes great pride in sharing this unique and valuable asset with neighbors in the broader community.
