Students begin their computer science journey through project-based learning, where they use programming languages like Java, Swift, Python, and XML to create meaningful applications. From their first lines of code to collaborative software builds, students learn to think like developers—writing clean code, testing solutions, and using industry-standard tools to organize and share their work.
Every Milton student is introduced to programming through Proof & Problem Solving courses, where coding is integrated into mathematical thinking. Many go on to pursue electives such as Advanced Programming Applications and Artificial Intelligence, where they dive into highly technical content and explore the ethical, technical, and creative dimensions of computing in today’s world. In these advanced courses, faculty become more team members than instructors, supporting and brainstorming along the way. Emphasis is on teamwork, creativity, and resilience, qualities that prepare students for both college and cutting-edge careers.
Understanding-and Harnessing-The Power of AI
Courses in Artificial Intelligence are popular among Milton students, drawing connections to the thriving tech landscape just beyond our campus in Boston. Some classes are even co-taught by industry professionals with expertise in AI relevant areas. Through partnerships, alumni networks, and our own faculty, students engage directly with experts and discover the power, and purpose, of AI.
Just as importantly, they understand the real-world implications of their work—whether exploring machine learning ethics or imagining new ways to improve their communities through technology.

The Milton Academy Robotics Program
Computer science at Milton is deeply connected to our incredibly popular Robotics Program, giving students an independent, tangible, hands-on outlet for their coding and engineering skills. Whether programming autonomous robots or fine-tuning algorithms for competitive challenges, students apply what they’ve learned in high-stakes, high-reward settings–and consistently win national awards at various competitions.
