Classics at Milton: Today's Study into Ancient Worlds

At a time when many schools no longer offer Latin and Greek, Milton continues to invest in the intellectual richness of the classical world.

The study of Classics is about far more than grammar and vocabulary. It’s a deep, layered discovery of how people thought, wrote, governed, and lived thousands of years ago—and in their own words.

Students develop powerful cognitive tools: pattern recognition, critical interpretation, and understanding their own processes. These skills translate across disciplines and into life beyond school, fostering precise thinking, analytical reading, and cultural literacy.

Comprehensive Classics Curriculum

Milton’s Classics program begins with Latin in Grade 6, extending through Grade 12 (Class I), from introductory through advanced seminar-style electives. For students who complete Level 4 of a language and are interested in deepening their exploration, the Upper School Classics Department also offers courses in Ancient Greek. Classics students are invited to go as far as their interest and dedication will take them.

Students in Latin and Greek courses explore a curated selection of some of the most influential works in Western literature and philosophy:

  • Vergil’s Aeneid
  • Homer’s Iliad
  • Cicero’s In Catilinam
  • Plato’s Symposium

Learning an ancient language bridges new understandings with prior knowledge, activating interdisciplinary thinking in every lesson. Students come away with a big-picture perspective on language, history, and identity that serves them across academic subjects and life experiences.
