Learning Together in a Diverse and Dynamic Community
At Milton Academy, students, families, and educators share a commitment to make Milton a place where everyone experiences true belonging, ownership, and purpose. We are committed to recruiting, supporting, and retaining a diverse faculty and staff, knowing that students thrive when guided by educators who bring a wide range of lived experiences and perspectives to the classroom and community.
Strong relationships and a sense of belonging allow young people to flourish. As students move through Milton’s Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, they engage in developmentally appropriate opportunities to explore identity, build cross-cultural understanding, and practice the skills of respectful dialogue, inquiry, and collaboration. These experiences prepare them not only for academic success, but also for thoughtful participation in a complex and interconnected world.
Our guiding principles have been endorsed by the school’s Board of Trustees and are in practice every day across campus. From Kindergarten through Grade 12, students grow within a richly diverse community where encountering people with different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and experiences is not incidental, it is foundational. Living and learning alongside others who may see the world differently teaches students to listen carefully, think deeply, and lead with empathy.

Across all ages, our work centers on four core areas of growth:

Identity and Belonging.
Students develop self-awareness, cultivate positive self-identity, and learn to connect meaningfully across difference—grounded in relationships that foster trust, respect, and shared responsibility.

Empathy and Inquiry.
With curiosity and care, students explore social issues, reflect on how identity shapes experience, examine biases, and learn to persist through the productive discomfort that comes with reflection and growth.

Perspectives
By engaging with multiple viewpoints, students sharpen their critical thinking, build skills for navigating disagreement, and learn constructive ways to resolve conflict.

Action and Leadership.
Students are encouraged to question inequity, stand up for others, and take initiative—emerging as inclusive leaders who partner with peers and adults to strengthen the Milton community.

COMMUNITY IN ACTION: Equity and Inclusion in the Upper School
Leadership, Belonging, and Purpose in a Global Community. In the Upper School, equity, inclusion, and justice are central to how students learn, lead, and live together. Because of Milton’s unique balance of day and boarding students, students participate in a globally connected community comprised of classmates from across the country and around the world. As adolescents step into greater independence and responsibility, our program offers the guidance, resources, and community they need to understand their own identities; engage thoughtfully with our diverse community made up of many identities and cultures; and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive school environment. At Milton, we believe that learning and living in a diverse environment prepares Upper School students for success in college and well beyond.
From the moment students arrive, our aim is clear: Every student should feel recognized, supported, and empowered to bring their full self to Milton. Students form connections with one another, develop cross-cultural communication skills, and build the shared expectations that shape our community.
Throughout the year, students deepen this work through robust all-school programming, a wide range of affinity and cultural groups, and opportunities to lead, publish, organize, and participate in community-wide conversations. Whether they are hearing from guest speakers, collaborating in advisory, or leading community discussions, students practice asking meaningful questions, expanding their perspectives, and understanding their role in creating a more equitable environment for all.
Milton offers pathways to advanced engagement—from campus leadership roles to national conferences focused on leadership. Supported by faculty and staff engaged in ongoing professional learning, students discover that equity and inclusion are not only shared values but shared responsibilities.
At Milton, Upper School students learn to navigate a complex world with clarity, empathy, and resolve—prepared to lead with integrity and help contribute to communities where everyone can thrive.
